Myth #1: CFL's (compact fluorescent light bulbs) emit mercury while incandescent ones don't.
Reality: CFL's actually emit less mercury, since the coal-powered plants used to make the incandescent ones are the largest source of such mercury.
Myth #2: It's eco-friendly to, when asked paper or plastic, get paper.
Reality: Although from a solid waste standpoint, plastic is indeed worse, both are equal in the amount of carbon dioxide they emit. It is much better to buy a reusable bag, which can be easily found at your local grocery store.
Myth #3: The appliance is off, so it's not using power.
Reality: Even when you turn appliances off or even when you have a phone charger plugged in and its not charging anything, it is still using power (called "vampire power"). Either buy a smart power strip or just unplug appliances when you're not using them!
Myth #1: Making Changes Doesn't Make a Difference
Reality: Making changes, even small ones, can make a huge different. Just buying recycled napkins can save hundreds of trees. Even if you feel that the cause if hopeless, if you start to change, it will inspire change in others. Don't give up hope--that is what got us in this mess in the first place!
Myth #2: Going Green is Expensive
Reality: Actually, quite the contrary! Many of the changes where you use less energy mean a much lower electricity bill. This is also true with using less water, not to mention the amount of money you save when you don't have to pay gas prices!
